The Tools You Need to Start Your Own Earth Day Revolution

Make a difference this Earth Day. We need to recruit Clean Energy Patriots and YOU can help!

Forty years ago, nearly 20 million Americans participated in what was the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day was started to spotlight issues related to environmental degradation and the need to protect our planet. Though much progress has been made in the four decades following its creation, this year we have little room to celebrate – Big Oil and corporate polluters continue to hold the reins of power in Washington. It’s time to redouble our efforts and convince lawmakers that our world cannot suffer another forty years of environmental neglect, abuse and apathy.

Today, an overwhelming majority of Americans are ready to move in a new direction. We have the solutions and resources – we just need the political courage from members of Congress. We can revitalize our economy and create jobs by moving to a clean energy economy, enhancing our national security by lessening our dependence on foreign oil and cleaning our environment from harmful pollution. As we approach the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, it’s time for the Senate to take action on comprehensive climate and energy policy.

But we need YOUR help to start America’s Clean Energy Revolution.

  1. SIGN the Declaration of Energy Independence
  2. CONTACT your Senator – By phone, in person, or online
  3. WRITE a letter to your local newspaper
  4. TELL your friends and networks

Sign the Declaration

Use your voice! Sign the Declaration of Energy Independence!

Since the first Earth Day began 40 years ago, and despite incredible progress on environmental protection, America has a failing energy policy that continues to reward polluters, undermines the health of the American people, threatens our national and economic security and keeps us dependent on energy sources from overseas.

We call on the Congress to finally push aside the obstruction of the polluter lobby and stand with America's Clean Energy Patriots. We call for America's elected leaders to join us as Clean Energy Patriots and deliver on the promise of a clean energy revolution and climate action now.

SIGN THE DECLARATION NOW.

Contact your Senator

Your elected officials need to hear from you. They depend on you to educate them about what is happening and what issues are most important to their constituents. If you do not tell them that you’re a Clean Energy Patriot, they will not know how to represent you and your issues.

Contact your Senators in one of these ways:

Make a phone call – call your Senators office. Make sure you tell them your name, your hometown, and that you’re calling to tell them to support comprehensive clean energy and climate policy in 2010. Call 202-224-3121 to be connected to your Senator’s office. Not sure who your Senator is? Check here.

Stop by their office – Senators aren’t in Washington all the time. They have home offices all across your state. Your Senator has staff waiting to hear from you. Drop by a local office and ask the staff member if the Senator plans to support comprehensive clean energy and climate policy in 2010. Find the office closest to you here (simply search by state, choose your Senator, and then click “Complete Contact Information” in the lower right of their bio page).

Letters to the editor are quick to write, often relatively easy to have published, and are the most widely read section in the paper. Feel free to submit one of the letters below or write one of your own.

Dear Editor,

As we approach the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, it’s time for the Senate to support a clean energy revolution.

Dear Editor,

In America, we take pride in our vast landscapes, natural parks, coastlines and waterways that distinguish our nation from others around the globe. Yet despite all we’ve been given, we have so much to lose if lawmakers don’t take immediate action to address the real danger posed by global climate change. Aside from the environment itself, human health is in peril because of fossil fuel pollution, and inaction will only jeopardize the air our children breathe and the water they drink.

Our leaders in Washington cannot break the grip of special interests. Unfortunately, Big oil, big coal, and big businesses are holding back our progress to maintain the status quo that lines their pockets at the expense of public health.

As we count down the weeks till Earth Day, we call on leaders in Congress to take a stand for once on principal. We have a unique opportunity to write a new chapter in America’s history, and it starts by our Senators supporting meaningful and comprehensive climate and energy policy. For the sake of our nation’s future, let’s stand up together and enact policies that protect our environment, our health, and our way of life.
